My Interview

Tell us about your work on antimicrobial resistance?
I am a GP and, in my role as a Professor, I lead and work with a large number of scientists who conduct research to help GPs, nurses and patients make best use of antibiotics.
How does your work make things better for patients?
We have shown that the routine use of antibiotics in primary care directly impacts on bacterial resistance, we are actively looking for antibiotic alternatives and we are starting to identify the patients who are most (and least) likely to benefit from antibiotics.
What are the best 3 things you've seen in Primary Healthcare to combat antimicrobial resistance?
1. A growing awareness of the problem if resistance, both among clinical colleagues and patients. 2. Better measures of antibiotic prescribing so that GPs and nurses can monitor how well they are doing. 3. Serious support from governments around the world to help primary care researchers find the evidence needed to reduce bacterial resistance to antibiotics.
